McCORMACK FIGHTING FOR UPGRADE OF COOTAMUNDRA’S LES BOYD OVAL/FISHER PARK

14 April 2025

Cootamundra’s Fisher Park will receive $400,000 from a Federal Coalition Government for an upgrade which will include badly needed female changerooms, Nationals’ Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, has announced.

Mr McCormack said the building project would include not only female changerooms, but also new toilets, a bar and kitchen.

The building will replace two shipping containers located next to the Cootamundra Sports Stadium which house the Mick Bucknell Bar and kiosk facilities.

“I was recently shown inside the current facilities and was shocked by how cramped it was inside,” Mr McCormack said.

“The volunteers who prepare food there and serve patrons do an outstanding job for the community and deserve better facilities.”

The project was first raised with Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council in August 2022 when the growing number of females playing Rugby League was raised. It was pointed out player numbers were rising but growth was threatened by there being no female changerooms at Fisher Park.

“This project has the backing of many Cootamundra sports clubs and will be a huge boost to one of the town’s premier sporting facilities,” Mr McCormack said.

“Fisher Park is an iconic Riverina sportsground, but it needs this upgrade badly.”

Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council Mayor Abb McAlister said a new amenities block would make a massive difference to the venue.

He said the current facilities to be replaced were past their use-by date and were long overdue to be replaced.

“If we get funding Council will be over the Moon and so would the people of Cootamundra because it’s a well-used facility and the infrastructure around it just needs updating.

“It would be fantastic if we could get it, and we really appreciate Michael’s efforts to follow it through.

“It’s been on the agenda for a while.

“It’s a sporting oval but there are a lot of other functions they have there, they have carnival weekends and festival weekends.

“So it’s not just a sporting facility it’s an overall community facility.

“The infrastructure needs renewing and it would be fantastic to have it all redone and all up to standard.”

Cr McAlister thanked Mr McCormack for again fighting for better community infrastructure.

“Michael took the trouble of finding out what was needed at Fisher Park and then fought hard on our behalf for a funding commitment. He has delivered on what he promised,” Cr McAlister said.

Mr McCormack said the investment was part of The Nationals’ continuing commitment to delivering better facilities for rural and regional Australians.
