ANZAC Day competition 2012
Riverina school students have the opportunity to win fabulous book prizes as part of an ANZAC Day writing competition organised by Federal Member Michael McCormack.
High school and primary students are invited to write an essay, short story or poem of no more than 250 words on this year’s theme: “ANZAC Day in the Riverina”.
Two wonderful books will be awarded to both the secondary and the primary student with the best entry from each of the four regions within the electorate: Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, Snowy Mountains, South-West Slopes and Wagga Wagga and District.
This year’s prizes, from the Australian War Memorial, are the beautiful hard cover book Australian Women and War for the high school section and The Red Poppy, a wonderful tale for primary age children which comes with a special music CD.
“They are fantastic books which convey the true spirit of ANZAC in a special way,” Mr McCormack said.
“Last year more than 500 Riverina boys and girls took the time to enter the competition and I hope even more put pen to paper this time.
“I received entries from students from Kindergarten to Year 12 which was just marvellous.”
Every student who sends in an entry will receive a special signed certificate.
“ANZAC Day is our most important national day,” Mr McCormack said.
“I know how much this day means to the people of the Riverina, with local Army, Air Force and Navy bases here and so many former servicemen and women living in the region.
“I also know numbers, particularly of young children, are growing at ANZAC Day services each year.
“I hope the schoolchildren again embrace this opportunity to write their thoughts about ANZAC Day and how much it means to them and I look forward to schools taking part in what is a great concept.”
The winning entries will again be published in commemorative ANZAC booklets to be mailed to each and every Riverina home leading up to 25 April.
Entries must be received by Mr McCormack’s Griffith or Wagga Wagga electorate offices by Friday, 16 March, 2012.
