$100m in sports funding on offer to schools: McCormack

RIVERINA primary schools have until the end of the week to register for the first round of funding under the Coalition’s $100 million Sporting Schools program, according to Riverina MP Michael McCormack.

“Local primary schools can be in the running for funding to bolster the variety of sports offered before, during or after school hours during terms three and four this year,” Mr McCormack said.

“It’s often said there’s something in the water when it comes to sport in the Riverina. We are a region which boasts an impressive number of sporting stars, and school sports can often be the starting point for a lifelong love of sport and physical exercise.

Mr McCormack also said programs such as this can develop healthy habits eating and exercise in children.

“Statistics show that approximately three quarters of Australian children spend their spare time watching television and only one third are managing to make the recommended one hour per day of physical activity.

“Regular exercise and a balanced diet is all about encouraging healthy habits early, so I would encourage schools to register their interest in this funding to continue that vital work,” Mr McCormack said.

Applications for the first round of the Sporting Schools program close on Friday 26 June 2015. Further information can be found here: https://www.sportingschools.gov.au/.
