Reopening of the Newell: A vital boost for the Riverina
Member for the Riverina and Minister for Small Business, Michael McCormack has hailed news that the Newell Highway is set to reopen between Forbes and West Wyalong.
“Its fantastic news that this key link in our transport network is set to reopen after six long, tough weeks,” Mr McCormack said.
“I’ve met with and heard directly from many landholders, Councils and small business operators during the closure of the highway and this news couldn’t have come at a better time.
The devastating impacts of the closure have been felt by many communities that I represent, especially those that rely on passing trade, with some having to reduce staff hours and counting extreme financial losses.”
Mr McCormack said that the closure of the highway not only added detours and disrupted travel plans but has also added significant pressure to the network of local council roads where traffic was diverted.
“The safety of road users is essential and I am grateful to the residents, businesses and travellers for their patience during the prolonged road closure,” Mr McCormack said.
The re-opening of the highway signals that the Central West is open for business and people are encouraged to stop, have a break and spend their dollars in the towns and communities along the Newell.
“Once traffic again starts to make its way along the backbone of the Central West, our communities can get that much needed kick start they’ve been waiting for.”
