2020 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
This year has been like no other in living memory.
We have endured droughts, bushfires and a pandemic.
Regional Australians are resilient. The people of the Riverina and Central West are a perfect example of the strong spirit in which we go about our lives.
As always, when nature throws its worst at us we Australians are at our best. I draw inspiration from hearing and seeing the generosity and compassion of our communities.
But, through these challenges, we always have hope. We come together in times of trouble.
This year’s harvest is going to be one of the best seen in a long time. Regional Australians have been their best selves to get on with their lives in a COVIDSafe world.
Please also remember the reason for the season – the birth of Jesus Christ, an event which brings hope and renewal to the world and a message which still resonates strongly today.
Christmas is a season of joy and peace. It is a great time to catch up with family and friends and reflect on the year which has passed. Sadly, though, there are many for whom Christmas is a time of great loneliness and loss. We must remember those people at this time of year.
There will be many this festive season who are away from their loved ones, working, serving in our defence forces, health and emergency services, and those working on the land. We pay tribute and recognise the sacrifices these people make to give up their time with their loved ones to protect, serve, work, keep us safe and fed when we’re enjoying being with our friends and family.
Many of us will be on the roads this Christmas, especially as opportunities to travel interstate have become available. Please be cautious and patient and do not speed, text or drink and drive.
Catherine, my family and I extend our best wishes to all for a Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2021. Please remember it isn’t about the gifts you don’t have to give, but about the love and friendship you can offer those around you, your family and friends at this special time of year.
