$3.6 MILLION FOR LAKE ALBERT ROAD UPGRADE
Wagga Wagga’s ageing Lake Albert Road will undergo a significant upgrade through funding delivered from the Australian and New South Wales Liberal and Nationals Governments.
The Federal Government has committed $191 million to build on the NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads program.
Through the program, Wagga Wagga City Council will receive $3,646,102 towards the removal and replacement of the Lake Albert Road surface and replacing damaged kerb and guttering.
Riverina MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government’s funding injection was about generating jobs, encouraging spending and stimulating local economies.
“The injection will see $382 million of joint funding allocated to shovel-ready projects able to start in the next 12 months, driving an estimated 3,500 jobs in regional NSW,” Mr McCormack said.
“Lake Albert Road is one of Wagga Wagga’s busiest thoroughfares and I am pleased to see the upgrade will take into consideration the anticipated increase of heavy vehicle usage into the future.
“This is all about getting people where they need to go sooner and safer.”
Member of the NSW Legislative Council Wes Fang said the road upgrade would benefit thousands of Wagga Wagga residents.
“Lake Albert Road is a vital arterial road for Wagga Wagga residents which will only see more traffic into the future,” Mr Fang said.
“It is pleasing to see the acceleration of its rehabilitation as the city continues to grow.
“This funding is a clear example of the three levels of Government working together to achieve positive results for our local community.”
Mr McCormack said the Lake Albert Road project formed part of a wider $1.5 billion Federal Government infrastructure package which will provide an immediate injection into the economy and bring jobs back online to help stem the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new package will fund shovel-ready infrastructure projects which can support local jobs immediately.
The Federal and NSW Governments will deliver $32,261,135 towards projects across the Riverina electorate.
“This funding will deliver critical infrastructure projects right across the country to help keep construction businesses running and people in jobs,” Mr McCormack said.
“$1 billion of our Federal Government package will fund projects that can get under way now and over the next six months, to give an immediate boost to the economy and local jobs – right at the time we need it.
“We will work together with the states and territories to deliver these job-creating priority projects, building on our unprecedented co-operation to date through the National Cabinet of States and Territories.
“This is part of our $100 billion, 10-year infrastructure pipeline, which is laying the foundations of a financial bridge to recovery on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis.”
