KEEP SAFE ON OUR ROADS THIS EASTER

With the upcoming Easter long weekend and school holidays starting across much of the country, the Australian Government is urging Australians to keep safe whilst travelling.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Easter period could be a particularly dangerous time on our roads.

“This is very much a time for family and getting together and I urge all Australians to drive safely this Easter break to make sure we all arrive safely at our destinations,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“Road safety is always important, but particularly over the Easter period. As many Australians are taking the opportunity to get together with family and friends or take a much-needed break, it is crucial for everyone on our roads to think about their safety and the safety of others.

“Over the past five years, an average of 15 people have lost their lives over the Easter period. This is a tragic and unnecessary loss of life, with immeasurable impacts for the loved ones and communities left behind.”

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz has urged all motorist to drive safely this Easter and said the Australian Government was prioritising road safety.

“The Government is taking significant steps to improve road safety for all Australians, including by investing more than $2.5 billion directly for road safety upgrades and vital services, such as providing $8 million to upgrade Driver Reviver sites across the country,” Mr Buchholz said.

“Driver Reviver sites are critical in tackling driver fatigue to make our roads safer, which is why I am proud to be part of a Government that continues to invest in the program.

“One death on our roads is one too many, which is why we must all drive to the conditions, ensure everyone is buckled up, take regular breaks and not engage in risky road use – so we can all get to our destinations and back home safely.

“The Australian Government is committed to tackling the problem of road safety, we need all road users to take extra care when they get behind the wheel, to get to zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”
