NEW INFRASTRUCTURE FOR KURRAJONG RECYCLING

Kurrajong Recyclers will benefit from a recycling infrastructure boost funded jointly to the tune of more than $500,000 by the Federal and New South Wales State Governments.

Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack welcomed the grant, saying it will increase Kurrajong’s processing capacity by 238 tonnes a year.

“Kurrajong does a power of work for the Wagga Wagga community and this funding will ensure it continues to play a vital part of our nation’s recycling future,” Mr McCormack said.

“The upgrade to infrastructure will increase efficiency, capacity and quality to enable Kurrajong to better process CDs, glass and plastic, as well as creating more local jobs.”

Duty MLC for Wagga Wagga, Wes Fang, said this grant is a win for both the environment and the local economy.

“This program is all about supporting our waste industry to get innovative large-scale projects off the ground.  Upgrading Kurrajong’s CDS, glass and plastic sorting lines means we divert more waste from landfill whilst simultaneously boosting the economy by remanufacturing those resources into new products,” Mr Fang said.

“The people of the Riverina are keen recyclers, and this grant will help transform the waste industry in our region.”

The Federal and NSW State Governments have co-invested $260,405 each ($520,810) and Kurrajong Recyclers has contributed $537,153 towards a total cost of $1,057,963.

Kurrajong Recycling is one of 22 NSW projects jointly funded under the Federal Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) and NSW State Government’s Remanufacture NSW program.

Federal Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley today announced $24 million in funding in a state-wide infrastructure roll-out that will increase the state’s recycling capacity by 120,000 tonnes a year.

“This is about easing pressure on our environment and taking responsibility for our waste by recycling more materials, creating more jobs and driving economic investment,” Minister Ley said.

A further grant round of RMF funding will open by the end of 2021.
