APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR NAIDOC WEEK GRANTS
This year’s NAIDOC Week will be an opportunity for Riverina and Central West residents to showcase the best of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, says Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack.
Mr McCormack said the Federal Government had opened a new NAIDOC local grants round, with $1.4 million available to support local communities to host events and other activities during NAIDOC Week between 8-15 November.
“The Riverina and Central West has celebrated NAIDOC Week in past years with wonderful events supported by the Government, including a NAIDOC Fair organised by Cowra High School, a WAWI Festival in Wagga Wagga, workshops and activities at Coolamon and the presentation of interactive stories to preschool children at Peak Hill,” Mr McCormack said.
“I’m looking forward to our communities applying for NAIDOC Week grants this year so as many people as possible can share in the celebrations.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play a vital role in the story of our nation and, through these grants, events will be held to celebrate our proud history, share culture, and recognise and honour the contributions and achievements Indigenous Australians.”
This year’s theme, Always Was, Always Will Be, is an opportunity for all Australians to engage with Indigenous culture, gain a greater understanding of our nation’s shared history and celebrate the unique place Indigenous peoples have in our society.
Mr McCormack is encouraging everyone to plan how they will get involved with NAIDOC Week and is looking forward to unique events and other activities which people will come up with this year to showcase the best of Indigenous Australia in a safe way.
